Disposal Problems

Garbage disposal repair near you in Apex

These are the six disposal calls we get most in Apex. Find yours and you will know what the fix usually is.

Hums but the blades will not turn

The motor has power but the blades are locked, usually by something hard that went down the drain. We free the blades and test the unit. If it spins freely again, the repair is done. If it keeps locking up, the motor is the issue and we talk about replacing it.

Leaking from the bottom of the unit

A leak from the underside or the body means the seal inside has failed. A disposal in that state is done, and we replace it. If the water is coming from the flange, a hose, or the drain connection instead, that can often be fixed without a new unit.

Jammed after something fell in

Utensils, bones, and fruit pits are the usual culprits. A jam is typically a repair: we free it, check the blades and the flange, and confirm nothing is damaged. We would rather save you a new disposal than sell you one.

The reset button keeps tripping

Pressing reset once after a jam is normal. If it trips again and again, the motor is overheating or the wiring is bad. We check the power supply and the unit and tell you which one is at fault.

Replacing a builder-grade disposal

A lot of Apex homes from the 2010s and early 2020s came with the least expensive disposal the builder could buy. They are now 10 or more years old, and loud, slow, or leaking. We replace them with a unit that fits your household.

Adding a disposal, or a disposal plus a slow kitchen drain

Adding a disposal means a switch, power, and a compatible sink drain. If the sink is also draining slowly, the line often needs attention too, and a new disposal on a partly blocked line just fills it faster. We check the drain as part of the job.

Clear Answers

Repair or replace, honestly

  1. 1

    We find out what failed

We look at the unit, the mount, the wiring, and the drain below. Where the water is coming from and whether the motor turns by hand tell us most of what we need to know.

  2. 2

You hear repair or replace, plainly

A jam usually means repair. A leaking body means replace, because the seal cannot be fixed. A tripped reset or a dead unit depends on what we find, and we explain it before you decide.

  3. 3

Price first, tested before we leave

You see the price before we start and approve it before anything happens. We finish the work, run water through the unit, and check every connection for leaks.

Apex Kitchens

Disposals in Apex homes

Apex grew fast in the 2010s and early 2020s, and many of those kitchens still have the disposal that came with the house. Neighborhoods like Scotts Mill, Haddon Hall, Bella Casa, and Seagroves Farm are at the age where those builder-grade units are wearing out: motors weaken, seals leak, and the old mounts loosen. Older homes near downtown Apex and in the 1990s subdivisions often have much older units, and sometimes older wiring to match.

Not every Apex address is on town sewer. Parts of New Hill and the Friendship area, on the western and southern edges, are often outside town limits and on private wells, and homes like that are often on septic as well. A disposal and a septic system do not mix well: ground-up food adds solids to the tank and makes it fill faster. If you have a septic system, tell us before we install anything, and check with whoever pumps your tank. Town sewer homes do not have that concern, and see drain cleaning in Apex for the kitchen line.

Garbage disposal questions in Apex

How much does it cost to install a garbage disposal in Apex?

It depends on whether we are replacing a unit or adding one, the model you choose, what is already there for power and mounting, and the condition of the sink drain. We give you the price before we start and you approve it before any work happens.

Can I put a garbage disposal on a septic system?

You can, but it is not ideal. A disposal sends extra solids into the septic tank, which fills faster and needs pumping more often. If your Apex home is on septic, think about whether you need one, and check with your septic service. We will tell you plainly what we would do.

What horsepower garbage disposal should I buy?

For most homes, somewhere in the one-third to three-quarter range is plenty. A larger motor grinds tougher scraps and runs more smoothly, and it is worth it for a busy kitchen. It will not fix a slow drain. If you bought a unit yourself, we are glad to install it.

How long should a garbage disposal last?

Most last somewhere around 8 to 15 years. Builder-grade units tend to be at the short end of that. A unit that is leaking from the body is finished whatever its age.

Can you reuse the old mounting assembly on my new disposal?

Sometimes. If the old mount fits the new unit and is in good shape, it can go back on. Often it is worn or it is a different style, and we replace it since the work is already open. We tell you which one applies to your sink.

Why does my disposal run but the sink still drains slowly?

The disposal may be fine, with the blockage in the pipe after it. The kitchen drain collects grease and food solids over time. We can look at the line and clear it, and if the clog keeps returning we will tell you what is causing it.
