Humming but not spinning
A hum with no spin means the blades are stuck, usually on a bone, a fruit pit, or a utensil. We clear the jam and test the motor. If it frees up and runs, it is a repair. If it jams again or the motor is worn, we say so.

Disposal Problems
Most disposal calls are one of these six. Tell us which one sounds like yours and we will tell you whether it is a repair or a replacement.
A hum with no spin means the blades are stuck, usually on a bone, a fruit pit, or a utensil. We clear the jam and test the motor. If it frees up and runs, it is a repair. If it jams again or the motor is worn, we say so.
Water coming out of the body of the unit means a seal has failed inside. That cannot be repaired, and the unit needs to be replaced. A leak from the top flange or a drain connection is different and often fixable, so we find where the water is coming from first.
A jam usually means repair, not replacement. We free the blades, check for the cause, and tell you whether the unit has life left. A disposal that jams every week is telling you something about the motor or what is going down it.
If the red reset button keeps tripping, or the unit is dead with the reset pressed, the problem is a worn motor, a bad switch, or the wiring to the unit. We check the power side before condemning the disposal.
Many Cary homes still have the entry-level disposal that came with the house. They are loud, they jam easily, and they fail on their own schedule. Replacing it on your terms beats doing it over a flooded cabinet.
Adding a disposal where there was none means a power connection, a switch, and a drain connection that fits. And if the sink drains slowly with the disposal running, the clog is often past the unit. We check the line and clear it, so a new disposal is not blamed for an old problem.
Clear Answers
We check how the disposal is mounted, where it leaks, what the wiring looks like, and how the drain below it flows. You get an honest read, not a default to the biggest job.
A jam usually means repair: we free it and test it. A leaking body means replace. A tripped reset or a dead unit depends on what we find, and we tell you what we found before you decide.
You see the price before we start and approve it before anything happens. We connect the new unit or finish the repair, run water through it, and check every connection for leaks before we leave.
Cary Kitchens
Most of Cary was built from the 1980s through the 2000s, so plenty of kitchens have disposals that are 15 to 25 years old, or the builder-grade replacement someone installed a decade ago. Neighborhoods like Preston, Lochmere, Kildaire Farms, and MacGregor Downs are full of them. The older the unit, the likelier a leak is the housing itself, and the likelier the old mounting parts and wiring are worth replacing while the cabinet is open.
Cary is almost entirely on town sewer, so a disposal here is a normal kitchen fixture. What matters more is the drain. A disposal sends more food solids and grease into the kitchen line, and in older Cary homes that line is where trouble builds. If a new disposal still leaves a slow sink, the answer is usually drain cleaning, not another disposal. If the whole kitchen is being updated, see our sinks, faucets, and disposals service.
Our shop is at 3460 Apex Pkwy, on the Apex side of the town line, so most Cary addresses are a short drive. We work Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00. Call, text, or book online. For the rest of your plumbing, see our Cary plumber page.
Commercial Service
Disposals are not only a kitchen-at-home item. Office break rooms, small restaurants, and rental properties around Cary run them hard and cannot wait long for a fix.
Break room sinks see coffee grounds, food scraps, and a lot of hands. We repair or replace the disposal and check the sink drain, scheduling around your office hours where we can.
A disposal that fails in the middle of service is a problem. We repair or replace the unit and look at the line behind it, since kitchen drains are where grease builds up.
Tenant turnovers and repeat disposal calls add up. We replace failing units, report what we found, and keep the work consistent across your units.
Helpful Details
It depends on the unit you choose, whether we are replacing one or adding one, the mounting and wiring that are already there, and whether the sink drain needs work. We give you the price before we start, you approve it before any work happens, and nothing is added without your okay.
Yes. A new disposal needs a power connection and switch, a drain connection that fits your sink, and a sink with a disposal-style drain opening. We check all three when we look at the cabinet and tell you what it takes before we start.
Horsepower runs from about one-third to one for homes. A bigger motor grinds more and runs quieter and smoother, but it does not fix a drain problem. We match the unit to your household and your sink, and we are happy to install one you bought yourself.
Roughly 8 to 15 years, depending on the unit and how it is used. Builder-grade models often sit at the short end. If yours is leaking from the body, it has reached the end whatever its age.
Sometimes. If the new unit uses the same mount and the old one is tight, clean, and not cracked, it can be reused. Many older mounts are worn or do not match the new disposal, and since the cabinet is open anyway, we usually replace them. We tell you which applies.
Yes. We service disposals in break rooms, small restaurants, and rental properties. Call (919) 679-1275 and tell us what the unit is and where it is.
