Water Softener Repair

Water softener problems we repair in Apex

Most softener repair calls are one of these six. Tell us what yours is doing and we will tell you what it usually takes.

Water suddenly hard again

Scale is back on the faucets and the soap will not rinse. Check whether the bypass is open and whether the unit has power. If neither explains it, the problem is in regeneration, the resin, or the valve, and we find out which.

Softener not regenerating

The unit should run a cleaning cycle on its own. When it does not, the cause may be a power loss, a bad setting, a failed control head, or a clogged drain line. We check each one and tell you if it is a repair or the end of the unit.

Salt bridge or mushing

A hard crust forms over the salt and nothing dissolves underneath, or the salt turns to sludge at the bottom. The tank looks full and the water is hard. We clear the bridge and the sludge, and look at why it formed.

Resin failure

Resin beads do the softening, and they wear out over time. When the resin is spent, regeneration will not help. We tell you honestly if the resin is the problem and whether replacing it or the whole unit makes more sense.

Stuck bypass valve, overfilling brine tank, control head errors

A bypass stuck halfway lets hard water through. A brine tank that overfills points to a valve or float problem. An error code or blank screen on the control head can be a setting, a power supply, or a failed board. We trace each one.

A new softener when repair does not pay

If the unit is worn out, we replace it. You get the price in writing before we start. See the sizing and placement steps below, and the [water softeners overview](/water-softeners) for salt-based versus salt-free.

How a softener job goes in Apex

  1. 1

    Test and diagnose

A tech tests your water at the tap and looks at the softener: settings, salt, valve, bypass, drain, and power. For a new system, the test result is what we size from.

  2. 2

Repair, or size the new system

We size a new softener by the hardness of your water and how many people live in the house, so it does not regenerate too often or run short. We explain the repair and replacement options and give you the real price before we start.

  3. 3

Install or repair, then show you

A new unit goes in on a loop with a bypass and a drain connection. We show you the bypass and how to add salt, so it is not a mystery later.

Water softening in Apex homes

Most homes inside Apex town limits are on town water from Jordan Lake. It is treated and tested, but scale on fixtures, spotty dishes, and short water heater life are common reasons Apex homeowners look at a softener. Addresses toward New Hill and Friendship are often outside town limits on private wells, and a well needs a test first, because iron or sulfur takes more than a softener. Our well pump service covers the rest of that system.

For a new install, we find a spot near where the water enters the house, with a drain and an outlet close by. In many Apex homes that means the garage, and in others a utility closet or crawlspace. The softener needs a drain for the regeneration cycle and power for the control head. We put it on a loop with a bypass, so you can shut it out of the line. Homes in Abbington, Woodcreek, Salem Village, Seagroves Farm, and Jordan Pointe all call us for this.

Start with a free water test, or call or text (919) 679-1275 or book online. Our shop is at 3460 Apex Pkwy, and we work Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00. For the rest of the house, see our Apex plumber page.

Helpful Details

Water softener repair and installation questions in Apex

Why is my water softener not softening even though it has salt?

Common causes are a salt bridge, a bypass left open or stuck, a power loss or bad setting, a failed control valve, or worn-out resin. A tech can check each one. Call (919) 679-1275 and we will find out which it is.

Do you repair softeners you did not install?

Yes. We service existing softeners: resin, control valve, brine tank, salt bridges, and stuck bypass valves. We tell you whether repair makes sense or whether replacement is the better call.

How do you size a water softener?

From the hardness of your water, which the free test measures, and the number of people in the household. We do not guess. We explain the size we recommend and why.

Where does a softener go, and what does it need?

Near where the water enters the house, with a drain for the regeneration cycle and a power outlet for the control head. In Apex that is often the garage. It is plumbed with a bypass valve so you can isolate it.

I am on a well near New Hill. Can you help?

Yes. A well needs a test first, because iron, sulfur, or manganese needs treatment beyond a softener. We plan around what is in the water, and our well pump service handles the pump and pressure tank.

How much does softener repair or installation cost in Apex?

It depends on the problem or the system, your water, your home, and the plumbing involved. We give you the price in writing before we start, and nothing is added without your okay. Call (919) 679-1275.
