Water Line Repair and Installation

Water line problems we handle in Raleigh

Most Raleigh water line calls come down to one of these. If yours is different, call and describe it.

Main service line leak

A soggy yard with no rain, a sunken patch between the meter and the house, or a meter that keeps moving with every fixture off. We trace the line, confirm the leak, and say whether it is a repair or a replacement.

Pressure that dropped

Weak pressure at every fixture can be a corroded line, a partly closed valve, or a failed pressure reducing valve. We test first so you do not pay to replace a line that is fine.

Galvanized service line

Galvanized steel rusts from the inside and shrinks the opening, so flow drops year after year. Once it is leaking or badly restricted, replacing it is the lasting fix.

Polybutylene service line

Gray polybutylene pipe, used from about 1978 to 1995, fails at its fittings. If your line is polybutylene, we replace it with PEX or copper before it fails.

Failed pressure reducing valve

A PRV that has failed can leave pressure too high or too low. We test it, replace it if needed, and set the pressure so fixtures and the water heater are not stressed.

New line for an addition or detached building

A new bathroom, an accessory dwelling, or a detached garage or shop needs its own supply. We plan the route, size the line, and tie in on your side of the meter.

Clear Answers

How a water line job runs

  1. 1

    Locate and diagnose

We find the line, check its material, and test pressure and flow. If you suspect a leak, we confirm where it is before anyone digs.

  2. 2

Trench or pull, priced in writing

Depending on the route, we dig a trench or pull a new line through the old path. Either way the price and the scope come in writing, and you approve before work starts.

  3. 3

Pressure test, permit, and meter coordination

We pressure-test the new line. The work is permitted and inspected where the City of Raleigh requires it, and we coordinate with the city when the meter is involved.

Raleigh Water Service

Water lines in Raleigh

Raleigh covers many eras of homes. Older ones may have galvanized service lines, and homes built from about 1978 to 1995 may have polybutylene. Both are worth replacing before they fail. The usual replacement is PEX or copper, and we pick the material with you based on the run and the conditions. Triangle clay soil swells and shrinks through the year and mature tree roots can press on a buried line, so older lines see real stress.

Where the line runs decides the method. If the path is open, we trench and lay new pipe. If a driveway, patio, or mature landscaping sits over the line, we may be able to pull a new line along the old route instead of digging all of it. We walk the line with you and explain which fits. The meter is the dividing point: the line before it belongs to the city and the line after it is yours. We work with the City of Raleigh on permits and meter coordination, so you are not stuck in between.

Our shop is at 3460 Apex Pkwy in Apex, and we work Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00. Call or text (919) 679-1275, or book online. For more of what we do in the city, see our Raleigh plumber page.

Helpful Details

Water line questions from Raleigh

How do I know my water service line is leaking?

Signs include a wet or sunken spot in the yard, a bill that climbs with no change in use, low pressure, or a meter that moves when every fixture is off. We trace the line to confirm before recommending a repair.

How much does water line replacement cost in Raleigh?

It depends on the length and depth of the run, the material, what is above it, and whether we trench or pull a new line. The price comes in writing before any work starts.

Should I replace a galvanized or polybutylene service line?

Usually yes. Galvanized restricts flow as it rusts, and polybutylene fails at its fittings. We replace both with PEX or copper and explain the choice.

Do you have to dig up my whole yard?

Not always. Some lines can be replaced by pulling a new one along the old path, and others need a trench. We tell you which fits your line before you approve anything.

Who is responsible for the line, me or the city?

The city side ends at the meter, and the line from the meter to the house is the homeowner's. Confirm your property with the city, and we will help work out which side the problem is on.

Do you pull permits and work with the city on the meter?

Yes. Water line work is permitted and inspected where the City of Raleigh requires it, and we coordinate with the city on the meter side. Call (919) 679-1275 and we will scope it.
