Clay laterals with open joints
Older Raleigh homes were often connected with clay pipe in short sections. Every joint is a place for roots to enter or for the line to shift. The camera shows which joints are open and how far the damage runs.

Sewer Line Problems in Raleigh
Raleigh has a lot of old pipe under a lot of old trees. These are the six problems behind most of our sewer calls here.
Older Raleigh homes were often connected with clay pipe in short sections. Every joint is a place for roots to enter or for the line to shift. The camera shows which joints are open and how far the damage runs.
Orangeburg is a pitch-fiber pipe used in the mid-century era. It softens and can go out of round or collapse. If the camera shows a flattened or flaking section, a spot repair rarely holds and the lateral needs replacing.
Raleigh yards inside the Beltline are shaded by large, old trees. Roots find joints in clay and fiber pipe and grow into a mass that catches paper. Cutting them clears the line for a while. The pipe still has to be sound for the fix to last.
Triangle clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and a buried line can settle into a low spot. Waste and paper sit in that sag. Cabling gets water through but the belly stays, so the section has to be dug and set back to grade.
If you have been cleared two or three times and it backs up again, stop paying for cable and get the line camera inspected. A repeat backup means there is a cause in the pipe, and we find it.
Many older homes have no cleanout, so every clearing means pulling a toilet or working through a vent. We install a cleanout at the right point on the line so future clearing and cameras go in from the yard.
Clear Answers
We run a camera through the lateral, find the damage, and mark where it sits and how deep. You see the footage before we recommend anything.
If the damage is limited, we dig down and replace that section. If the pipe is failing along its length, we explain why a full replacement makes more sense. You get the price before any work starts and approve it before we dig.
The work is permitted and inspected where the city requires it, and the job is not done until it passes. We backfill the trench and leave the area ready for you to re-seed or re-sod.
Raleigh Sewer Lines
Neighborhoods inside the Beltline, such as Five Points, Hayes Barton, the Cameron Village area, and Mordecai, include homes built before 1980. Those homes were often connected with clay or Orangeburg laterals. Add mature oaks over the yard and soil that moves with the seasons, and you get the pattern we see most: a line that backs up, gets cleared, and backs up again. If your home has been through several clearings, a camera tells you whether the pipe is the problem.
Replacement here is open-trench. We dig along the lateral, set new pipe to the right grade, and tie it into the house and the city connection. Expect a trench, not a pinhole: lawn, beds, and walkways over the line will be disturbed, and we walk the route with you and say what will be affected before you approve the work. We add a cleanout on the new line, and the work is permitted and inspected where the City of Raleigh requires it. For the clog side of the problem, see drain cleaning in Raleigh and hydro jetting.
Our shop is at 3460 Apex Pkwy in Apex, and we work Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00. If sewage is coming up a drain, stop running water in the house and call. For everything else we do in the city, see our Raleigh plumber page.
Commercial Sewer Service
Older commercial buildings in Raleigh share the same aging clay and cast iron under the slab and the lot. We camera the line, repair or replace the damaged section, and work around your hours where we can.
Kitchen and restroom lines take heavy use. We camera the building lateral, jet it when grease is the issue, and replace failed sections so a backup does not close you for a day.
When several units or tenants share one lateral, one failure affects all of them. We document the line with footage and give the owner or manager clear options and a price.
Older buildings and shared lines need an honest look before money is spent. We camera first, explain what we find, and schedule repairs around services and meetings where possible.
Helpful Details
Repeat backups after cleaning, roots seen on camera, a flattened or flaking section, or damage in more than one place usually point to replacement. One failed joint is a spot repair. We camera the line, show you the footage, and give you the price for each option.
It depends on the length and depth of the line, what is above it (lawn, driveway, landscaping, a root-filled tree zone), and whether it is a spot repair or a full replacement. The price comes in writing before any work starts.
Our sewer work is open-trench: we dig to the damage and replace pipe. After the camera inspection we tell you how much digging your line needs. A single failed section is a small excavation, not the whole run.
No, only the path of the line, and only the section that needs it for a spot repair. We locate the line and depth first and tell you what will be disturbed. Re-seeding or re-sodding afterward is up to you or your landscaper, and we explain the restoration we do before you approve.
Sewer repair and replacement is permitted and inspected where the City of Raleigh requires it. We confirm what your job needs when we scope it and schedule the inspection so the work is signed off.
