Slab Leaks in Raleigh

Slab leak problems we see in Raleigh homes

Whether you are in central Raleigh or out past the Beltline, most slab leak calls look like one of these.

A hot-side slab leak

Hot water that is slow to arrive, a heater that never seems to stop, or a warm patch on the floor. We separate the hot side from the cold to confirm which line is losing water.

A water bill spike

If the bill jumped and nothing changed in your household, we check whether water is leaking inside the house, under the slab, or at the meter side, so you know before you spend anything on repairs.

A warm spot or damp flooring

Warm tile, buckling laminate, or carpet that will not dry. These point to a leak below, and we use listening equipment and pressure testing to find the exact location.

Cracked slab or plumbing leak?

Cracks, uneven floors, and sticking doors can come from soil movement alone. We test the supply lines to tell you whether water is part of the story or the slab is just settling.

A second opinion on a repipe quote

Got a repipe quote and want to be sure? We locate the leak, test the system, and tell you if a spot repair or reroute would be enough. If a repipe is needed, we will say so and explain why.

Leak detection before buying a home

Raleigh has plenty of slab homes with decades of age on the plumbing. Before you close, we can test the supply lines for an active leak and check what the piping is.

Clear Answers

How we handle a slab leak

  1. 1

    Tell us what happened

What you noticed, when it started, and whether anyone has looked at it before. If there was a prior quote or detection report, we want to see it.

  2. 2

    Detection before digging

Listening equipment, pressure testing, and hot-versus-cold isolation locate the leak and the line it is on. You see what we found before any repair is proposed.

  3. 3

    Your options, priced

A spot repair through the slab, a reroute overhead or through the walls, or a repipe when the system is failing. You get the price for each before we start, and nothing happens until you approve it.

Slab Leaks in Raleigh Homes

Slab leaks across Raleigh's housing stock

Raleigh is a big city with several eras of housing, and the leak risk differs by era. Older homes have older copper, and copper supply lines can develop pinhole leaks as they age. Homes built in the Triangle between 1978 and 1995 may have polybutylene supply piping, which can fail at the fittings. In a slab home, either one can leak out of sight.

Raleigh sits on Triangle clay soil, which swells when it is wet and shrinks when it is dry. That movement can strain supply lines running under a slab, and it can also crack the slab itself. Those two problems look alike from the living room, so we test the plumbing before we say which one you have. Newer subdivisions in North and West Raleigh have newer piping, but they are not exempt, and a repair there is often a clean spot repair. For leaks that are not under a slab, see leak repair.

We serve Raleigh from our shop at 3460 Apex Pkwy in Apex, Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00. Call, text, or book online and tell us what you are seeing. For all our Raleigh service, see our Raleigh plumber page.

Helpful Details

Slab leak questions in Raleigh

How does slab leak detection work in Raleigh homes?

We listen along the floor and the supply lines with sensitive equipment, pressure-test the water system, and isolate the hot side from the cold side. Together those narrow the leak to a line and a location, so any opening in the floor is small and in the right place.

What does slab leak repair cost in Raleigh?

It depends on the location of the leak, how many lines are involved, the floor finish, and whether you choose a spot repair, a reroute, or a repipe. We give you the price before we start, and nothing is done until you approve it.

Do you handle slab leaks throughout Wake County?

We serve Raleigh and the surrounding Wake County towns, including Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, and Morrisville. Call (919) 679-1275 with your address and we will confirm what we can do for you.

Is my floor crack a slab leak?

Not necessarily. Clay soil can crack a slab without any plumbing leak. A bill that has gone up, a warm spot, or the sound of running water makes a leak more likely. We test the lines so you are not guessing.

Another company quoted a full repipe. Do I need one?

Maybe, maybe not. We will locate the leak and check the condition of the system. If a spot repair or reroute fixes it, we will say so. If the piping is failing throughout, a repipe is the better answer, and we will explain why.

Can you test for a slab leak before I buy a house in Raleigh?

Yes. We can pressure-test the supply lines and listen for an active leak, and we can tell you what type of piping the house has, including polybutylene in homes from roughly 1978 to 1995.
