City water or well: not the same job
OWASA water and well water carry different things. The [free water test](/free-water-test) measures your hardness and what else is in the water, and that decides whether you need a softener, a filter, or both.
Water Softener Installation and Repair
Before we talk equipment, we test your water. A Chapel Hill house on OWASA water and an Orange County house on a private well are two different jobs, and the test tells us which one we have. Then we size, install, or repair the softener, with a bypass you can find.

Softener Repair and Installation
Most calls fit one of these six. Tell us which sounds like yours and we will tell you what it usually takes.
OWASA water and well water carry different things. The [free water test](/free-water-test) measures your hardness and what else is in the water, and that decides whether you need a softener, a filter, or both.
The salt is there, but the water is hard again. We check the control head, the settings, the power, and the drain, and tell you whether it is a repair or the unit is at the end of its life.
A crust forms over the salt and nothing dissolves underneath, or the control head shows an error or nothing at all. We break the bridge, check the brine tank and the draw, and find out why it happened.
Resin does not last forever, and iron or chlorine shortens it. If the unit regenerates but the water stays hard, worn resin is a likely cause. We test and tell you whether to rebed it or replace the unit.
Orange tint, stains, and grit mean the well water needs more than a softener. We plan filtration alongside it, using our [water filtration](/water-filtration) options, and our [well pump](/well-pumps) service covers the pump and pressure tank.
Chapel Hill houses put the main in a crawlspace, a garage, or a tight utility closet. A softener needs room for the tank, a drain, and power. We find the spot, or tell you plainly if there is not one.
Clear Answers
A tech tests your water at the tap and explains the results in plain language. If you do not need a softener, we say so.
We size the system from your measured hardness and how many people live in the house. Then we pick the spot near the main, with a drain and an outlet close by. You get the real price before we start.
The unit goes in on a loop with a bypass valve and a drain connection. We show you the bypass, how to add salt, and what to watch for, so it is not a mystery later.
Water in Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill and Carrboro are served by OWASA, and homes in outlying Orange County are often on private wells. That split matters more here than in most Triangle towns. On city water the question is mostly hardness and scale. On a well it can also be iron, sediment, or sulfur, and a softener alone will not fix those. We do not guess. The free water test tells us what is in your tap water before you spend a dollar.
Where the unit goes is its own question. Older homes near campus and in Eastgate often have the main in a crawlspace or a small closet. Garages and basements are common in Meadowmont, Southern Village, and Governors Club. We look for dry floor space, a drain within reach, and an outlet, and we keep the bypass where you can get to it. Hard water also leaves scale in a water heater, so see our Chapel Hill water heater page if yours is wearing out early.
Our shop is at 3460 Apex Pkwy in Apex. We work Monday through Saturday, 7:00 to 18:00, and serve Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the surrounding Orange County neighborhoods. Call or text (919) 679-1275, or book online. More about how we work in Chapel Hill. Gas work too? See gas lines in Chapel Hill.
Commercial Water Treatment
Hard water costs a business money in scale, spotting, and equipment that wears out early. We install and service softeners for commercial customers as well as homeowners.
Soft water helps shampoo rinse out and keeps scale off sinks, shampoo bowls, and fixtures. We size the unit for how much water the shop really uses.
Scale hurts dishwashers, ice machines, and water heaters, and spots glassware. We install softening ahead of the equipment that needs it.
Espresso machines and brewers scale up inside. We test the water, then set up softening or filtration to protect the equipment and keep the taste right.
Helpful Details
If you see scale on fixtures, spotty dishes, or dry skin, probably. We would rather test than guess. Our free water test checks hardness at your tap, and we explain the result with no obligation to buy.
It varies by home, so we do not quote a number for your tap. The free test measures yours, and that measured hardness is what we size a system from.
Yes. A well needs a test first, because iron, sediment, or sulfur needs filtration beyond a softener. We plan around what is in the water, and our well pump service handles the pump and pressure tank.
Yes. We service existing softeners: resin, control head, brine tank, salt bridges, and stuck bypass valves. We tell you honestly whether repair makes sense or replacement is the better call.
Common causes are a salt bridge, a control head that is not regenerating, a bypass left open, or worn resin. A tech can check each one. Call (919) 679-1275.
It depends on your water, the size of your household, the system, and the plumbing involved. We give you the price before we start, you approve it before any work happens, and nothing is added without your okay.
