Faucet Repair and Installation

Faucet problems we fix in Durham, inside and out

Most faucet calls are one of these six. Tell us which one sounds like yours and we will tell you what the fix usually involves.

Outdoor faucet that will not shut off

A hose bib that runs or drips when closed has a worn washer or stem, or a body that has failed. We repair it when the parts are good and replace the bib when they are not. A running spigot is wasted water and, in winter, a freeze risk.

Freeze split inside the wall

When a hose is left on through a freeze, water in the pipe expands and can split it behind the wall. It often looks fine until spring, when you turn the water on and it sprays inside the wall. We find the split and repair the pipe, not just the bib.

Frost-free sillcock replacement

A frost-free sillcock has a long stem so the shut-off sits inside the heated house, but only if it drains. We replace worn ones, set them to slope so they drain, and tell you to take hoses off before a freeze.

Dripping or leaking indoor faucet

A drip at the spout is usually a worn cartridge or seal. Water at the base of the handle or the faucet body points to failed O-rings or a corroded fitting. We repair it when we can and replace it when the faucet is past saving.

Low flow or sputtering

Scale clogs the aerator first, then the cartridge. Moderately hard water makes this common across the Triangle. We clean or replace the parts, and check the shut-offs and supply lines if the flow is still weak.

New faucet with a counter or vanity

A new countertop or vanity is the best time for a new faucet and new under-sink shut-offs. You can supply your own faucet and we will tell you up front if anything will not fit. For the sink itself, see [sink installation and repair in Durham](/sink-installation-repair-durham-nc).

What a faucet call looks like

  1. 1

    Tell us which faucet

Kitchen, bath, or the one on the outside wall, and what it is doing. Photos and the faucet brand help. We give you an arrival window and the price before work begins.

  2. 2

    We find the cause

We check the cartridge or washer, the shut-offs, and the supply lines. For an outdoor faucet we also check the pipe behind it for freeze damage.

  3. 3

    Repair or replace, then test

We explain the options, do the work, and run the water to check every connection for leaks before we leave.

Durham Faucets

Faucet plumbing in Durham homes

Durham winters get cold enough on some nights to freeze an exposed outdoor line, and the hose bibs on older houses are the usual casualty. In neighborhoods like Forest Hills, Hope Valley, and North Durham, many sillcocks are original, and some are not frost-free. A hose left attached traps water in the bib, and the first hard freeze can split the pipe inside the wall. If a bib has never closed all the way, or you see water inside after turning it on, tell us.

Indoors, the pattern is age. In Southpoint and Woodcroft, builder-grade faucets and their stop valves are reaching the end of their life. In older homes closer in, including Downtown Durham and Brightleaf, the faucet may be fine but the shut-off beneath it has not moved in decades. We usually replace the shut-offs and supply lines when we set a new faucet, since the cabinet is already open and the old ones tend to fail when touched.

Faucet repair and installation questions in Durham

How much does faucet repair cost in Durham?

It depends on the faucet and the cause: a cartridge or washer repair, a full replacement, an outdoor bib, or old shut-offs that need replacing. We tell you the price before we start and nothing is done until you approve it. Call (919) 679-1275 or send photos.

My outdoor faucet will not shut off. Can it be repaired?

Often, yes. A worn washer or stem can be replaced. If the bib body is corroded or split, we replace the whole bib. We also check the pipe behind it, because a bib that will not close sometimes has damage inside the wall.

How do I know if a hose bib froze and split?

Look for water spraying or dripping from the bib when it is on, or a wet spot on the wall inside, in the crawlspace, or in the basement below it. The split is usually behind the wall, so you may not see it until the water is turned back on. Shut the water to the bib and call us.

What is a frost-free sillcock?

It is an outdoor faucet with a long stem, so the point where water shuts off is inside the heated part of the house. It only works if the water can drain out, so remove hoses before a freeze.

Should I repair or replace my kitchen or bath faucet?

A faucet with a worn cartridge or seal is often worth repairing. A corroded body, a faucet with parts you can no longer get, or a finish that is failing is better replaced. We tell you which it is and let you decide.

Can you install a faucet I bought myself?

Yes. Tell us the model and we will check that it fits your sink or vanity, and we will say up front if anything will not. We usually replace the shut-offs and supply lines at the same time.
